How Deptford Day Was Started

In 1973 the township council wanted to have some type of township celebration for the residents and at the same time publicize the town. Councilmen Ron Marks and Jack Sikking contacted the Deptford Jaycees and asked this civic organization to spearhead this project. Various other civic and service organizations were contacted and ideas grew. The original idea of a fireworks display turned into a gala event beginning with a parade in the morning, a fair in the afternoon, and a fireworks display in the evening. The expertise of the Oak Valley Fire Company was used in preparing an excellent parade featuring fire apparatus, string bands, clowns, floats, etc. The fairgrounds were filled with foods, games and activities. From a few people sitting around a small table, the Deptford Day Committee emerged with many subcommittees including, parade, fairgrounds, sound, lighting, parking, publicity and promotions. Fund raising projects developed and the idea became a reality because township residents, businessmen, civic and service organizations gave of their time and money so that we all could enjoy ourselves.

The purpose of the "DAY" is to (1) build a unity within the township, (2) have an entertaining day for all residents and friends, and (3) allow service organizations to raise funds, which go back into township services. The day is financed mainly by the hard work of its directors. The cost of running the day is in excess of $20,000.00. We receive support from the Township Council with services such as sanitation, maintenance and Police. Other income comes from booth space rental, sale of bumper stickers and miscellaneous contributions from local businesses. This year we have three large business contributions. Nextel/Deptford Communications who donated $8000 for the fireworks and parade. Also, Columbia Bank and Fleet Bank each donanted $1000 towards our event.

We have expanded in size to 60 vendor spaces on the fairgrounds and 70 crafters with new and used items under the trees. Special mention to be given to the early pionneers of Deptford Day: Dr. Frank Scambia, Chairman; Tom Barber, Co-chairman; Joan Tracy, Secretary and Marge Dio, Treasurer. These folks were the pioneers who laid the ground work which we still follow today. Special mention to be given to Phylis Wintling who has been a dedicated member since day one. She had been our Treasurer from 1992 to 1999. Phylis has been a wealth of support and information and retired after serving tirelessly for 25 years. Special mention to be given to Ray Angelini Electrical who has also been involved with Deptford Day. Ray and Joe Albaneese have brought us all their talent in lighting up the night before the fireworks and providing the sound for Deptford Day. Special mention to be given to two organizations who have been a part of the day since the begining are The Cunard Family of Clowns with their heilum balloons and face painting , and Boy Scout Troop #62 with their funnel cakes.
